Making the Most of the Mundane
mun·dane — /ˌmənˈdān/
lacking interest or excitement; dull.
20 January 2020
This month hasn’t even ended, yet, it feels incredibly long. But I think that every January feels like this— everyone is trying to get back on track after all of the holiday festivities like parties, vacations, and family meetings. People are trying to find new jobs and people end up moving to unknown territory. We’re all trying to find a rhythm with everything again.
Once we find that rhythm however, it’s so incredibly easy to get lost. We build good habits and follow a routine that works well for us as individuals. But once we brush our teeth twice daily, get our hair twisted every Sunday night, tuck the sheets between the wall and mattress, and wash all of the dishes before bed, what’s next after that? What do we have left to do? Or to look forward to?
I call the routine that I’ve created for myself mundane. I’m not scared to admit that. And it isn’t bad either. This routine that I’ve developed is practical and useful— I have great hygiene, my skin is doing decently well, and cleaning the house and making the bed every morning is a task that ultimately wakes me up and helps get my day started.
Although these things are mundane, in the end, we’re still living, and we get the opportunity to experience these mundane scenarios. Being able to do and feel is something that some people don’t get to do.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way this week.
Reflections
There are some things I can live without, and there are things I need. If I ultimately need to do something, I should do so without feeling any kind of regret— it isn’t healthy for me to beat myself up over it.
I should try my best to stick with some daily habits that are essential to my everyday well being.
I used to look at chores as a nuisance. Now, I look at them as tasks that jumpstart my day. I look forward to them, actually.
